Kids like backpacks which they can stuff their worldly possessions in, so that they feel grown up. If they need to go on a play date, or you are taking them out to visit friends, they can keep items like a bottle of water in their backpacks. The Safe Kids Upstate organization revealed that a kid's backpack should be no more than fifteen per cent of his or her body weight. It is a South Carolina organization that educates the public about the prevention of childhood injuries.

Choose a kids backpack which has a cartoon motif, or is brightly colored. The child is likely to prefer it then. You can choose a pink one for a girl, and a blue one for a boy. Twins may like to have matching backpacks.

The bag should have many compartments, with sturdy zips, so that you can teach the child how to be organized. A bottle of water can be strapped on the outside of the bag for easy access. However, choose a small sized backpack so that the child finds it easy to carry.

Adjust the straps so that your child is comfortable carrying the backpack. Ideally, there should be a gap of two inches between the waist and the pack. Check whether there is a warranty, so that you can have it repaired in case there's a defect. Determine your budget and shop accordingly for the bag.

Keep a separate bag from the one your child uses for school will be convenient. Otherwise, transferring items to and from the bag can take time. You may also lose items in the process. The child may not prefer to use the school bag for leisure activities.

If you have signed your child up for a sport or a hobby class like dancing, check whether the bag is strong enough to accommodate the kit. Encourage your child to personalize the bag by putting a badge on it, or a sticker with his or her name.

Tying a bright thread in the zip of the bag will also help you to identify the bag, in case someone has a similar one. Resist the temptation to pack loads of things in your kids backpack. Otherwise, your child may have back pain from carrying the bag around. Check with the child whether he or she is comfortable with the weight of the bag once you have put all the items required inside it.
